DJ SHAKEE – JIVE TURKEY

DJ SHAKEE - JIVE TURKEY

DJ SHAKEE - JIVE TURKEY

I posted this mix up on the myspace page a couple weeks ago.  I finally listened all the way through.  There’s a few sloppy parts… but so far, people have been diggin it… so I’m putting it up here.

Its a little something for all the Disco heads out there. A whole lot of Disco/Funk, from the late 70′s and early 80′s. Its a lot of stuff that I’ve had and been collecting for a while.. even on wax… but I sorta fell off of it… so Bigups to Hey Mesa of the Cocaine Kids for turning me back on to it…
Its all done in one take. I did it with 2 turntables, a Rane 57, and Serato 1.9 beta.. so I got to throw in drops with the built in sampler. again.. all done in one take… with the exception of when I had to stop recording to answer a phone call. (just gotta be honest! Let me know if you can tell where I stopped recording… if you can tell… then that means my editing skills suck…) Oh.. the movie clips were also pre edited but they were mixed in live in the one(ish) take also. Anyways, have fun with it!!!

Songs in the Key of D – (a J Dilla tribute)

16 Feb

J Dilla, the MJ of beat making.

J Dilla, the MJ of beat making.

If you don’t know J Dilla, we can’t be friends right now.  Hit me back when you look him up and pretend to know what’s up.  Last Saturday, we went to the Echoplex for “Nightlife – Songs in the Key of D”.  It was another J Dilla tribute.  You could look at that a few ways.  Chances are, you’ll hear a lot of the same stuff you heard at the last J Dilla tribute.  But on a good note… you know its gonna be all good music!!  Plus the Beat Junkies never disappoint.  So take it as you will, but I had a good time.  I know that some of my friends were in Vegas and got all belligerent, and as much as I would’ve liked to have gone along, I’m not complaining about cheap drinks, good music, and a no hassle good time (as opposed Vegas priced drinks, music I’m not feelin, and all that line bullshit.)

So back to the Dilla tribute…. there was a merch table, and I picked up The Ma Dukes Collection.  Its a mixtape put together by Rhettmatic, J Rocc, Houseshoes, and a few others.  It features a lot of dope MC’s on there, and of course… Dilla beats.  Pick it up and support Dilla’s mom, who is fighting the same sickness that her son passed away from.  Click here to cop that mix.

There’s no real way to pick what the best Dilla beat is… he’s done so much so with so many artists, and some things that you didn’t even know about.  I’m gonna let you all have this one… its not digging deep by any means, but in my opinion, its one of his most relevant beats.  Common’s The Light can be played at the most underground of Hip Hop spots, as well as the most commercial club, and EVERYONE will sing along.  He made the value of  that Bobby Caldwell record shoot up on ebay!!  Dig deep enough, you’ll find it…. plus with Serato, everyone is selling their collections (but thats a whole different post.)

Common – The Light

(I know… like it said.. its not diggin deep, but the blog is new.. I can’t give you the good stuff yet… we gotta work our way to that.. so be sure to keep checkin back)

Its been said a billion times, and its almost cliche, but… Thank You Dilla for what you’ve given the world!

Saturday Morning waiting.

14 Feb

For those that don’t know, besides DJing, my day job is video editing.  I was supposed to meet my producer at 9am.  He called and pushed it back to 930.  Then pushed it back again to 10:30, but I missed that call and was already on my way.  Instead of turning back, I decided to go in early and get a head start.  Apparently, I can’t even get into the building without a key.  Oh well… at least the wireless reaches outside to the street.

So its Saturday, Valentines Day, President’s Day weekend (right?), Its a nice day out, my friends are in Vegas, and my girlfriend is asleep at my place.  I’m here typing away randomly on my blog.  On a good note, I have the radio on in my tuck (yes the radio) and DJ Icy Ice is on Movin 93.9 right now, and he’s killin it on the 80′s tip.  So definitely a big shout out to Ice.  At least I have some entertainment while I wait for my producer to get here.

DJ SHAKEE with Cymarshall Law on Hip Hop Official

13 Feb

Cymarshall Law is a cool cool cat, and a really dope MC. I believe he reps New Jersey. Be sure to check out his album. He’s got a track on there with KRS-One. You know KRS doesn’t give his stamp of approval to just anyone. I was blessed to be able to spin for this dude.

DJ SHAKEE with Topic on Hip Hop Official

13 Feb

So.. my resume is pretty random, and surprisingly thick. I’ve been blessed to do a whole lot of different types of events, from ghetto house parties, to big concerts. I’ve done a few tv spots on SiTV’s The Drop, and most recently, I’ve done stuff for Hip Hop Official. When they have an artist who comes in without a DJ, I get a call to fill in as the in house DJ. I’ve gotten to throw some cuts in for some dope upcoming artists. So shout out to Hip Hop Official, and check out The Notorious BLOG (its on my links to the side).

Anyways.. with that all said. Here’s the first one I did with them. It was with Topic, reppin West Covina!!!

So I figured its about time I got on this whole blog thing.  So… welcome to the Shakedown!  Its a work in process, but I’ll be posting things up anyway.  Be on the look out for music downloads, events, and a bunch of random things.  First, I gotta figure out how this thing works.  In the meantime, hit up my blog on the myspace music page for download links to mixes.
